Existential Crisis

OK, I confess. I've committed the unforgivable sin of writing yet another book on climate change. My only excuse is that the premise behind my little book is very different from any other I've seen, as should be evident from the brief introduction I've reproduced below. Needless to say, the topic I've chosen is of the greatest importance, which is why I felt so compelled to make at least some sort of attempt to come to terms with what I regard as the central issue, all too frequently overlooked.

I decided to make a pre-publication version available to anyone reading here, in the hope that at least some followers of this blog will be interested enough to read it and chime in with comments, critiques and suggestions for improvement.  Over the years I've been impressed with the intelligence of so many who've contributed comments on this blog, and am eagerly looking forward to your responses.

I am therefor inviting anyone interested in receiving an MS Word copy of the entire preprint to email me at doktorgosh (at) live.com with their request. I'll promptly respond with the full text attached.

N.B.: The book is now available here, via Amazon.com.

A note on the use of pseudonyms. I originally chose the moniker DocG because I was afraid colleagues in the field(s) where I've published extensively might want to dismiss me as just another "crackpot who thinks he's solved the JonBenet Ramsey case." I might well be such a crackpot, but I certainly don't want fellow professionals to dismiss my more "serious" work on that basis. As for the use of a pseudonym for the new book, my motive is a bit different. Climate change has become such an emotionally charged topic that I'm afraid to use my real name for fear of alienating certain friends and relatives who feel very strongly about this issue. I'd love to take credit under my real name for all my hard work on this book, but I really don't want to destroy my relationship with people who are close to me as a result. It's a sad commentary on where things now stand in the world that such a stratagem should be necessary.

The brief Introductory chapter should convey a good sense of how the book is organized and what it's about:

Existential Threat: Facing the Climate Change Abyss

Our world is in danger of spinning out of control, fraught with a challenge far more daunting than anything humanity has ever experienced in its long, convoluted history. And yes, I’m speaking of an “existential threat” – only not the one you’re being urged to fear. We are currently faced with a great many very real, very serious challenges: mass migration, mass shootings, regime change wars, the ever-present possibility of nuclear war, economic inequality, widespread poverty, drug addiction, etc. However, despite all these many, truly alarming threats, the attention of huge segments of the population, including many of our most influential scientists and powerful world leaders, is being diverted to focus increasingly on one issue to the effective exclusion of all others. You guessed it: “Climate Change.”

Characterized as an “existential threat” to the future of mankind, the continual warming of the Earth due to the nefarious effects of unchecked fossil fuel emissions has, according to just about every media source, become the foremost danger faced by humanity today. Based on the latest report from the UN-based IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), we have only 12 years to drastically curtail our reliance on fossil fuels (primarily oil, coal and natural gas) before the world is completely overtaken by major hurricanes, droughts, forest fires, flooding, famine, mass species extinctions, mass migrations and worse. Much worse – though precisely how worse is hard to say. Especially since there is no real evidence for any of it.

Yes, that’s what I said. Not only a lack of evidence, but compelling evidence to the contrary.
Not that it matters.

In Part One of this book I will present a scientific review of the evidence. And yes, I am indeed, as you’ve undoubtedly noted, a skeptic. However, unlike so many others who’ve written on this topic, I don’t expect you to believe me. In fact, unless you are already a skeptic, I feel sure you won’t. Based on many years of experience debating this issue, I’ve concluded that no matter what evidence one might present, no matter what science, what research, what data, what logic, attempting to convince someone who doesn’t want to be convinced is a waste of time.

What makes this book different is the fact that I no longer really care whether or not you believe me. As I see things, it’s already too late to argue one way or another on this topic. It’s not that “the science is settled” – I feel sure it isn’t – it’s that the issue is settled. Climate change is no longer a scientific matter, but a social construct. The debate is over and it’s been won by those most adept at influencing public opinion.

At this point, therefor, it’s no longer a matter of whether “the science” is right or wrong, but whether humanity can survive the extremely dangerous “existential” abyss we are now being forced to confront. I’m not talking about the predicted climate disaster, but the social and psychological trauma induced by demands increasingly seen as necessary to avoid it. The nature of this abyss will be covered in Part Two. Those with no desire to read yet another skeptical screed by another “denier” should feel free to skip Part One altogether and proceed to Part Two.

Why should I bother at all with Part One if the science is no longer relevant, you may ask? Well, maybe it’s just my ego, but I feel compelled to present my evidence and my arguments regardless of whether they will make a difference, regardless of whether it’s already too late. Maybe it isn’t too late, maybe that’s why I nevertheless urge readers to read Part One anyhow, or at least skim it. Maybe there is still some room for hope.

  1. Doc, I requested the pre-print book last night, and think it will be interesting. I imagine it did take careful and diligent research to cut through the bull and get to the facts. As you may have noticed, google searches are biased - interviews with scientists, climatologists, meteorologists, etc. are difficult to find yet google leads each search by proclaiming the U.S. is the biggest polluter of C02 emissions. In fact the U.S. has diligently reduced C02 emissions. The biggest polluters are China, Russia and India, although China has made some progress over the last two years. China is still the worst however. I won't be skipping Part One of your book, I will read it in it's entirety, or I can wait and buy your book. Please keep my name anonymous however, thank you, Y.

  6. I agree with you Doc, that a conversation about Climate Change/Global Warming quickly devolves into political argument. In fact, using google for searches related to how the whole mania began yield nothing. I might venture a guess that it started with Al Gore, however it gained traction really in the last two years. I have my suspicions as to why, and why arguments about it move along political lines. I admit I was hoping your paper would speculate how all of it started, and how it was fueled, and why. I ran across this article:

    https://www.investors.com/politics/editorials/the-stunning-statistical-fraud-behind-the-global-warming-scare/

didn't know if you had included that one or not. I think you would agree, however, that because one is a skeptic, does not mean that a mind can't be changed, provided the data to the contrary is bolstered by scientific fact, not hyperbole.

    1. Thanks for the link to that IBD article. I don't agree with the author's conclusion that the data "adjustments" in question were the result of a deliberate and dishonest attempt to "cook the books" to support their favored theory. In my experience it's usually more complicated than that. Perfectly honest researchers have been known to frame or adjust their data in such a way as to support a pet theory purely due to confirmation bias, based on the well known tendency for researchers to see things through the lens of their own preconceptions and/or expectations. This is why double-blind experiments have become the gold standard of so much research.

I've read through the paper that documents that adjustment process and could not help but notice how complex the process was and how many decisions had to be made as to which bodies of data to trust and which to adjust, and why. The problem here is that the study was led by Thomas Karl, a notorious climate change activist, whose decisions may well have been influenced (however unconsciously) by confirmation bias. Adjustments in long established raw data, assuming such is needed, should always be made by impartial researchers, not well known advocates such as Karl.

Nevertheless, when we take a look at the actual adjustments it seems clear that, contrary to all the fuss, they actually do very little to strengthen the "warmist" position. See, for example, this graph ( https://i.guim.co.uk/img/media/9951524278f9d06ad0cfc6a0135028a61b5e1bce/0_0_2000_1454/master/2000.jpg?width=700&quality=85&auto=format&fit=max&s=54ec0b0cf688dc7666af85a356a62ddd ), which shows that literally all the significant adjustments involve data prior to 1940, and that the overall picture remains essentially unchanged.

  7. I was unable to open your link, but I did note the graph you mentioned in your paper and how you would like to take a closer look had you had a chance to ask questions of the presenter.

I had initially tried to do a search as to just when the climate change/global warming conversation started, then how it picked up speed and spread like wildfire. And why. There is no question that during the Industrial Age factories were spewing smoke and polluting the atmosphere. Then we were afraid of acid rain. Then was it 20 years ago folks were afraid we were burning through the ozone layer. But you would think during the Industrial Age we would see the beginnings of the polar ice caps melting yet - the data doesn't support it.

I'm ever interested in how our changing culture gets on a particular bandwagon at a particular time but have noticed in the last 12 years how nearly everything we are up to in life has become politicized, which blurs all issues, clouds the facts, and does nothing to help us understand our universe and the people in it. 1. I agree with you, Y, regarding the political aspect. The climate change paradigm is consistent with the ecological concerns most of us on the left have held for some time. I say "us" because ecology has been a concern of mine as well. Whereas most Republicans tend to favor the interests of big corporations, including of course "big oil," "big gas" and "big coal." So when we began hearing about "the science" of global warming the lines were already pretty much drawn. I and a few others like me are the exceptions, sadly.

As for how it all got started, many will point to an address made by climate activist James Hansen in 1988, who warned at that time that if we failed to do something drastic "NOW" temperatures would soar in tandem with CO2 emissions and all sorts of horrible events would follow. His concerns seemed justified at that time, because of what looked like an alarming upward trend in global temperatures beginning in the late 70's, a trend that lasted until roughly the end of the century, about 20 years. Since this trend coincided with the continual upward trend of CO2 emissions, it was all too easy to associate the two and conclude that the emissions were responsible for the rise in temperature.

However, beginning a bit before the turn of the century, global temperatures leveled off considerably while CO2 emissions continued to soar, the so-called "hiatus." By that time, however, a great many minds had already been made up and a kind of mental inertia set in. At least that's how I see it. If we examine the big picture, beginning with the early 20th century till now, then, as I demonstrate in my book, we see NO correlation between CO2 and temperature outside of those fateful 20 years.

  8. I think you will recall how concerned we all were with the environment in the 1970's - Lady Bird Johnson's Beautify America, there were signs posted all along the highways and warnings of fines for littering. Then people were concerned with the landfills and cutting up plastic rings so that the seagulls wouldn't strangle on them - remember that? Was this just a lame attempt by the youth in America - the ones that are now praying to plants and asking forgiveness? Shortly after that the city would issue recycle bins, then we had to have a smog test on our cars once a year. It was random. Now it's every other year here. Smog tests have gone from $40 to $50, get one or else - no car registration renewal. Renewals went down in the early 90's, the older the vehicle, the less the cost to renew it. Then the price soared again. Plastic bags were eliminated in the grocery stores 3 years ago yet they continue to provide thin plastic bags in the produce section and you can always buy a plastic bag for ten cents - much more narrow ones that are not good for lining trash cans, yet I would think just as difficult to recycle.

I think what needs to be further teased out is just what kind of pollution is causing the current furor. Big oil, clean coal, factory smoke, car emissions, farting cows, etc. Greenhouse gases, okay, but what specifically.

There is this sense that we must do something NOW or the world will end as we know it. Someone started a clock when Al Gore predicted Armageddon, and that day came and went. Friends of mine paid $40,000 for a Chevy Volt, first one to be shipped to Michigan. He said he was sticking it to big oil. They aren't cheap. And as I look around here, I don't see many if any recharging stations. Hence, just how far can one go? Y

  14. Okay guys, I moved us over here. :)

CC..First off, I feel like this is surreal. I awoke the other morning, sat on the edge of my bed and wondered if it was all just a bad dream. It wasn't, it's real, it's our new normal, our new reality. And yes, it sucks.

Mostly, I am trying to distance myself socially from everyone, and haven't gone to any major events, etc. Of course, I am still working and hoping to be able to continue unless this state of emergency we are in right now tightens and we are all quarantined. My concern is for my son who has scheduled vacation time followed by disability until this is over. We are doing whatever we can and hope and pray it's enough and we all get through it.

As far as Trump goes, I think he has done just about as much as any leader could possibly do and I give him credit for the China ban which probably saved us thousands more infections. I am mostly pissed off that most of our medicines and medical supplies are made in a communist country that pretty much hates us. I hope this is a wake up call to our politicians and corporations to think twice before investing in and depending on a foreign country so heavily as to impact our well being.

I also think this is a time where the country should pull together and stop the partisan crap, the blame game, the BS. Put the blame where it belongs. Had Xi done what any decent leader would have done, we wouldn't be in this nightmare. If our government had really been watching out for us, they wouldn't have left us vulnerable to a communist regime that now has the power to cut off our medicines, etc. It's a disgrace, and I urge our young people to not be so complacent and get out there and demand that we are protected in the future so that something like this cannot happen again.

How's it going down your way? Hope you're keeping well also and that we all get through it.

The only thing Trump administration could do better is put out better information about the Corona virus. The John's Hopkins immunologist is putting out a lot of good information. Wash hands frequently. Take Vitamin D and zinc supplements. Koreans are using malaria drugs with zinc to help fight the virus very effectively. Keep updating on the status of the vaccine trials. Keep updating on the status of drugs like Remdesivir. Start putting people on camera who have been infected and recovered and testing negative to share their experiences which people will find out will be very minor.

The CDC is handling the whole test kit thing poorly. The guy from NIH, Fauci, needs to stay off camera.

  15. Trump's in a no win situation. Trump is a rational person and very difficult to deal with people around him acting irrationally. His whole team is acting rationally when everyone else around them are acting irrationally, very difficult. Look at Pelosi. She has some responsibility in all this and all she is doing is trying to take advantage of the situation, media too. The country could be sinking and all the Democrats and media are doing is throwing an anchor. It will come back to bite them.

I have no use for Nancy and think she should have retired ten years ago and I wasn't surprised at all at what they pulled. We have a government that doesn't work for the people, just doesn't work PERIOD, which is why Trump was elected.

As far as Fauci, I agree with you and am a bit surprised by him actually. I remember him acting quite differently when dealing with health crisis' in the past. I honestly don't know what to make of it and it's got me a bit worried.

  20. The thing the Republicans have to be careful not to do is to do too much government spending geared at stopping this and thus causing a sluggish recovery when this is over. This will be over by the end of the month. That's what FDR did wrong during the 1930's. The deflationary spiral was over by first quarter of 1932 but FDR started all this government spending and it took until 1949 for the Dow to get to new highs. Difficult to shed the effects of too much debt.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Biden's right. A wall won't stop a virus, nor will a belated travel ban. It's being passed by what's termed "community spread", individual to individual, folks in the US who have not traveled abroad. Because of Trump's CDC and other public health cuts, we have inadequate testing and cannot determine how many citizens are actually infected.

EG is right. There's no need for panic, which the media has certainly fed, but there is a need for awareness, for personal precautions, which Trump has done nothing to advocate, and in fact seems to flaunt as a geriatric, morbidly obese guy with poor nutrition who does not exercise, who insists on shaking hands, and insists his Tampa rally will go on.

Paul tells us this will all be over in a month, tells us Trump has reacted appropriately. Both statements are false based on the experience of other countries.

Take care, E, stay sensible. You and I will probably be well, even if infected, but I fear for your son and others at risk.

Biden's right? Really? Biden doesn't even understand the problem. The wall or the travel ban isn't designed to stop the virus. Trump knows we can't stop the virus. But, Trump knows we can slow it down to give us time to respond. We have to build up a collective immunity either through immunizations or a slow infection rate where the citizenry builds up a natural immunity and our health care system can respond. We don't want what happened in Wuhan (and in California) where they had to rapidly build temporary hospitals or seize hotel space.

There are no "immunizations" for COVID-19 and no chance of a "natural immunity".

It's here, it's being spread person to person, testing and public health responses have been trampled by Trump, whose only concern is the economy and his reelection.

Trump told us two weeks ago there were only fifteen cases, and soon it would be down to just one.

He just lies, and this time it's costing lives.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Man, my explanation just whizzed right over your head.

"There are no "immunizations" for COVID-19 and no chance of a "natural immunity"

So, all the people who have recovered from COVID-19 don't have natural immunity?

So, we're not going to develop immunizations?

That's why we want to slow it down. So, our health care system can handle the severe cases and the ones that aren't severe are where the population is building up an immunity. Hopefully by next viral season we'll have vaccinations.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The folks who have recovered are sufficiently healthy and not immuno-supressed and so can survive a viral infection. They have no "natural immunity".

We may well develop immunizations, but not in time to combat the present epidemic.

None of which takes away from Trump's lies and failures . . . "from 15 to 1". Epic.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's called anti bodies. People who have had SAR-COV-2 have developed anti bodies so probably are naturally resistant to getting it again. When I say natural immunity I mean people who have an immunity due to their DNA or from being exposed to it and developing anti bodies, not from immunizations. With immunizations you are injecting a dead virus and inducing the body to develop anti bodies.

What can he do? He can help mitigate which is what he did. He can also free up some funding which is also what he has done. The government systems we have, CDC, NIH, and HHS have been entrenched long before Trump came along. Also, I've heard there has been a lot of in fighting between the different agencies. Trump did good today by turning this over to private enterprise.

I think part of the cause of Trump's nonchalant approach is because of his relationship with the media and how they are openly hostile towards him. He knows they want to blow this up with the goal of hurting him.

  36. Well if that's what he did then I don't blame him for cutting CDC or NIH or NSC pandemic response office. However, and I haven't looked at the actual numbers, government usually calls a decrease in the increase a cut. I know how funny you and the left are with numbers. Trump know intuitively that the free market and private enterprise are much more suited to respond to things like pandemics, not government. Trump is doing what we elected him to do, make government smaller. We don't need a nanny state.

This will be over by the end of the month. I'm not saying it will be completely over. There will be other cases. But, the worst will be over. By the end of this month we as a nation will collectively realize this has been way overblown and the left have tried to use this to hurt Trump. Is this psychopathic? 45. I think again that is indicative of his relationship with the press. They are openly hostile to him. Trump is so amazing. You're right, anytime he's in front of the press or tweets it's insane. He's like Moses in the Bible who had all kinds of faults. He wasn't a natural born leader. Trump is somewhat the same. He's like Moses, a disruptor. But God is guiding him, somehow. In his speeches he connects with people. They're drawn to him by God. The most consequential President in this country's history.

  50. Thank you both for your good thoughts, words and wishes for my son. We are hanging in here and pretty much self quarantining. I think the social distancing will help tremendously and we shall see in the coming weeks if it's working as expected. I hope and pray that it does.

Our IT people were meeting at our office today to discuss the dynamics needed to allow us to work from home. I will be going into the office on Monday but after that, not sure. I have my own office, so the 6 feet apart works for us. We do however, exchange papers, etc throughout the day so we shall see.

It was good to see the politicians actually working together but sad that it took a pandemic to make it happen. We are all in this together and at this time should all be behind the President supporting his efforts. I SO hope you're right Paul and hope this is a wake up call to corporations and politicians to never again place our health and welfare in the hands of a foreign country who is not an ally, but rather an enemy that would like nothing better than to see us destroyed. I am absolutely livid over this, and would love to know how this happened? Why don't we make our own antibiotics, pain killers, medical supplies anymore? This has to change...quickly.

My husband got an email Saturday from his company that starting Wednesday all in his office building will be working from home until further notice. He's in IT security for the nuclear power division and they have always allowed employees to work from home 2 days a week prior to this so it won't be a big adjustment.

My area also has 2 drive-thru virus tastings, with results given within 4 hours (per my local FOX news). My state just had their first reported case Friday, with now a total of 12 in the state, and 5 in my county. The first reported case in my county that man had traveled overseas and became sick and brought it back here.

  80. Trump held yet another disastrous coronavirus conference today, in which he couldn’t give a single answer that was of any real value to anyone. That said, this time around it was different. There was a whole change in the nature of Trump’s babbling.

For the first time in probably his entire political existence, Donald Trump insisted today that the media is being “very fair.” He also took a pass on an opportunity to attack one of the people he hates most, Amazon and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos. Trump admitted we’re probably heading into a recession, and he pessimistically said he fears the coronavirus crisis might not be over until July or August.

This raises the question of what happened. Just this morning, Trump was taking cheap shots at New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Twitter. Now, this afternoon, Trump has clearly become scared. Sure, he bizarrely gave himself a ten out of ten for his handling of the crisis, but for the most part this wasn’t the usual Trump today, or even the recent Trump. It was some other new variant of Trump, who’s spooked enough to go so far as to try to make nice with the media.

Considering how horribly and dishonestly he’s botched this, and how many Americans are going to die as a result of his negligence, we award Donald Trump no points for anything he said today. Besides, he’ll probably be back to viciously attacking people by tomorrow; it’s his nature. But something must have happened between this morning and this afternoon that truly shook him. His suspicious answer about his own supposed coronavirus test?

But it's all good. It's contained. It's just a Democratic hoax.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I never said it was a hoax. But, the media have fanned the flames of this in their never ending desire to hurt Trump and have unwittingly hurt themselves and the entire country. This has caused a fissure in the credit system that can't be repaired. Nothing, and I mean nothing, can stop it now. Let me give you a few of the facts about the corona virus to calm you down. I think you're close to a breakdown. Based on an article in Science recently and using Bayesian statistics it indicates the actual mortality rate of the virus is about 0.2%. This means 2 out of every 1000 who contract the disease will die. Somewhat scary I know but was it worth fanning the flames and using it to hurt Trump? Based on this article, the number of deaths is probably the most accurate statistic being kept on the corona virus. Therefore the number of actual cases in the US is about 77,500. When people start doing all these tests they're rolling out the number will probably jump to over 30,000 initially within the next week or so. Most people who have the symptoms won't get tested. I'm estimating about 3/4's of the US population will contract it before the vaccines roll out, if they ever do. The virus is moving too fast. This puts an upper bound on the number of deaths at 400,000. It is a staggering figure I know but it might be a lot lower if these new treatment drugs prove effective. The media in their zeal to hurt Trump caused the fissure. It doesn't really matter though because when you have a money system built on credit it is eventually going to crack. And, if the crack is big enough there is no stopping it. This one is big enough.

    ReplyDelete
  100. What I'm trying to help you understand is that the corona virus will kill a few hundred thousand Americans. The fissure in the credit system will kill millions.

  101. I've heard through the grapevine that Trump is trying to get hydroxychloroquine to the market. I've heard he's authorized purchasing of mass quantity. Hopefully they can expeditiously get this done and stop this dreadful disease. There are many hurdles though, manufacture, testing, approval, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  102. It's a malaria drug. It's been around for years.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Really? Gee, you're so informative.

    ReplyDelete
  104. You remember the other day when we were talking about Remdesivir? Well, Remdesivir inhibits the replication of viral RNA by inhibiting the Replicase at one of the amino acid sites. Well zinc (2+) ion does the same thing. The problem is zinc is an ion in the body, in cytosol, and doesn't readily move through the cell membrane. That's where hydroxychloroquine comes into play. Hydroxychloroquine is a zinc ionophore. An ionophore helps move an ion through a cellular membrane. So, it will be important to dose zinc while also dosing hydroxychloroquine. The physicians might think you have enough zinc in your diet but take supplemental anyway. I think Trump will give the FDA a few days to fast track this but if it appears they are moving too slowly he will just override them. For crying out loud it is already being used in Korea to save patients.

    ReplyDelete
  105. The number of confirmed cases is getting ready to go into hyper orbit now that they have rolled out the tests. The number of deaths are actually are best most accurate number so with 176 death this indicates there are really 88,000 cases. The population isn't really going to understand what this means and the press is going to go berserk again attacking Trump. What the higher number will really indicate a much lower mortality rate but the populace won't figure this out for about a week. Trump will have to act fast and get these drugs hyper-tracked.

    ReplyDelete
  106. I really don't know what to make of all of this but mainly I am angry. Angry with the politicians, the corporations and the medical field.

They are talking about a drug for malaria that's 100 years old. The medical field has been given billions over the past 55 years and what have they done? Where are the Salks, the Flemings? They get up on those podiums and they talk about all they're doing these past three weeks. My question to them is WTF have you been doing for the past 55 years? We still have cancer, diabetes, kidney disease and many more, and we still don't have a cure for a coronavirus?!! We have to look at a drug that's 100 years old??!!!

And now, that it might help, youre wasting time trying to get approvals for manufacturing enough for everyone to maybe avoid those figures Paul stated??!!!

I hope the greedy politicians and corporations are happy with all the money they've made by selling us down the river.

We need divine intervention here folks. Please pray.

They'll eventually report the death rate at only about 0.2%. The problem with this virus is it is highly contagious with no immunity so it will eventually infect almost everyone-just like the common cold. I feel sorry for those people in NY city who work at the restaurants who work on tips. I think it's a bad move by Cuomo. I saw a story about a restaurateur who owns 20 restaurants in NYC who had to lay off over 250 employees. He said many of his restaurants won't be able to come back. A lot of small business people are heavily leveraged.

Hang in there, an exercise in patience and learning new social habits.

  116. Hi lil, it's all sorts really, started with toilet roll but running out of everything, I couldn't get dog food yesterday nor milk, bread or eggs, no hand sanitizer or paracetamol. Our numbers are heading like Italy so strict measures will be put in place. Things are being updated and acted upon daily.

  117. Evej,
If possible you want to try to start thinking ahead of what might run out next. That's the strategy I used and stayed ahead of the mob. Be thinking about things like batteries, phone charger cords, soap, light bulbs, paper towels, bag pet food, dish washing liquid, laundry detergent, apples, pears, oranges, potatoes, onions, canned food (beans, yams, carrots, fruit), etc.) Stuff like snacks, meat, etc. you don't need.

  118. Also, dental products, alcohol, peroxide, mouthwash, filters, etc.

    2. Evej, keep in mind things that may be plentiful now, to use for other purposes than intended; like coffee filters, wee wee pads for puppies, baby/body wipes.

Just yesterday someone in Cali went live having their beautician come to the house, no gloves or face mask and certainly not 6 feet apart so she could have her eyelash extensions done! On March 18 my state had 51 cases, this AM it's now 196, with 86 in my county. You're not Nostradamus. People don't need to be a doomsdayer nor a Pollyanna right now.

I'm telling you now by the end of next week the worst will have happened and the stock market will bottom. The Corona Virus is not the problem. It is the fissure in our credit system. I fear we have passed the point of no return. But, Trump is the most consequential President we have ever had and he may yet save us. He was put here for a reason.

    1. I cant see that Paul, in your country or mine, in fact half the world. The poor fled Lombardy to the poorer south in Italy, and took the virus with them. Germany on the other hand are handling it better as they are testing everyone, therefore carriers are being isolated as well as the infected, they have had a lot less deaths considering how many are infected there. We need a vaccine and quickly.

      Delete
    2. Trust me evej, everything's going to be OK. Italy has about 3.4M cases right now. That's why the death rate seems high. They are under counting the number of cases. 3.4M out of 60M citizens is alarming but, as soon as these treatments are in wide-spread distribution we'll start curing everyone so it won't matter if you get it. Also, only about .5% of those infected will need treatment, 1/200 maybe less.

The problem is that if you look at the label of the fish tank additives, they have other ingredients including possibly a biocide. Also, if you overdose either med you CAN die. That's why you should use either under a physicians care.

  141. It looks like the FDA has fast-tracked the use of blood plasma to treat SARS-CoV2. The problem is that this is not a quick solution. They have to get the plasma from patients who have had SARS-CoV2. You don't start getting the IgG positives until about a month after showing negative on the rTPCR tests. We will have 64 million Americans infected in about 5 weeks. We need the hydroxychloroquine and the Remdesivir now.

Italy's multiplier is less than the US's multiplier. US is high right now due to NY. US is >5 whereas, Italy's is <5. That is if all the deaths are being reported in Italy.

  144. Really doesn't matter, its pandemic everywhere now, all we can do is lockdown and wait for numbers to drop or a cure

    ReplyDelete
  145. It does matter. That multiplier is the key. If it peaks and then starts trending down that means we're turning the corner.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Let me give you an example. Early on, Korea's multiplier was 3 but it quickly started dropping after a couple of weeks. It is now less than 1. Although their total deaths are still going up their death rate has substantially slowed. That's what we want to see everywhere.

  147. As usual you're utterly missing the point.

Evie's is that this is a people problem, and that it's worldwide.

People are suffering and dying, more will do so regardless of your "multipliers", your credit fissures, your politicizations, your false assurance of cures and your false promise it will all be over by April 2nd.

    3. Look, Paul, you've 2 or 3 times tried to introduce abortion into the conversation, usually as a deflection when you've stepped on your dick yet again.  It's not an appropriate topic here.

I understand your need to please father/authority figures, and your nascent longing to be perceived as an authority yourself,  but it's time to face facts:

In the six months you've been here you've failed as a JBR contributor or  thoughtful inquisitor, while routinely insulting others.  You've failed (spectacularly) as a lay legal scholar.  You've failed at political punditry, and now you've failed at being a coronavirus authority.  Do you never notice that you get few responses, despite sometimes as many as 6 or 7 consecutive posts?

I've a suggestion for you, and it's kindly meant and may satisfy your need for some sort of recognition:   Start your own blog.  Come back and publish its web address here, post it to whatever message boards you seem to frequent.  Lil can help with that. Put it on reddit/JBR, reddit/Trump, send it to your compatriots in your local Trumpy cell.

You can be the ultimate authority on any subject upon which you wish to pontificate, whereas here you're just not gonna' get what you need.

  148. Hello guys!

Checking in here from the country's Coronavirus epicenter. Thank you for your thoughts, concerns and positive posts.

First off, we are doing okay, thank God. My fridge is stocked and so we don't need to go out much. When we do go out, we are masked and gloved and that's only when necessary. At home we are following the guidelines and luckily I have a condo with three levels which affords us plenty of space to keep apart. My son is doing well and is closely monitored which is good.

I am working from home for the past two weeks, which keeps my mind occupied, something I need more than ever right now. It's a ghost town here, everything is closed. I wake up everyday asking myself if I am dreaming all this, the reality of it is just too horrific.

I can't say I am not frightened, because I am. As a mother, of course you're strong for everyone else, but when alone, I have my moments and find myself depressed and weepy wondering when and how this is all going to end.

Thank you for thinking of us here, and please keep us in your prayers.
